Early life and career

Wright began acting as a child when he appeared in a toothpaste commercial. In 1993, he received a BA in Acting from The Central School of Speech and Drama. While he was working as a line reader for The Lion King he met a casting director who recommended him for a small part in People Like Us. He initially appeared in small roles in series like The Vicar of Dibley, Coupling and Black Books. In 2002, he got a leading role in Rescue Me although it was not recommissioned for a second series. He then appeared as PC Alan in Wild West.[1]

He was cast as amenable local police constable Mark Mylow for Doc Martin and played the part for two series. Wright later discussed his decision to leave Doc Martin at the end of the second series: "I thought that playing a Cornish policeman more than four years in row was maybe creatively not fulfilling. I wanted to explore other roles."[2] Wright went on to star in the ITV comedy series Bonkers. He began to concentrate more on stage work and moved to Bristol in order to work at the Bristol Old Vic. In 2007, he and Will Adamsdale wrote and starred in The Aussies at the Edinburgh Fringe. The pair later developed the show into a BBC Radio 4 comedy entitled Earls of The Court. Wright received positive reviews for his performance as a bodybuilder in Tom Wainwright's 2009 play Muscle. He reprised the role in 2011 when the play went on a national tour.[3] As of December 2011, he is starring in the West End production of Neil Hannon's Swallows and Amazons.[4]
